Almost a decade after the first Congress, IFOAM EU is celebrating its 10th European Organic Congress in the Netherlands this April 2016. The theme of this year’s Congress is transforming food and farming through organics. We want to look at how organic and agro-ecological approaches can really lead future agri-food systems and contribute to the development of EU policies that fundamentally address political, environmental and societal challenges.
The Congress aims to build on the outcomes of the IFOAM EU Vision 2030 process which culminated in the launch of “Transforming Food and Farming: An Organic Vision for Europe” in Latvia in 2015 and the strategies. Together with diverse food and farming stakeholders, we will develop practical strategies to develop organics in the long term and shape the EU market and policy developments so critical to transforming food and farming in the short to medium-term.
Implementing innovative ecological solutions for farmers and rural communities
Rural Development Programmes - European Innovation Partnership - Organic Regulation Review
Member states and regions will launch the Rural Development Programmes of the new EU Common Agricultural Policy in 2015. What will the impact on famers and rural communities throughout Europe be? How can the new programmes stimulate greater delivery of public goods and green job creation?
The European Innovation Partnership for Agriculture (EIP-AGRI) aims to bring rural development, farming and research together. It presents many opportunities and can be used to put eco-functional intensification at the heart of the EU productivity and sustainability objectives. How will this new policy instrument be implemented? How can organic and agroecological approaches contribute to its development?
The new rural development regulation offers the potential for greater recognition for organic farming, yet the sector faces the prospect of considerable regulatory changes in the coming years. How can the new organic regulation help make Europe more organic and drive innovation for sustainable food production?

The IFOAM Organic World Congress is organised every 3 years in a different country. The aim of the congress and surrounding activities (pre-conference, IFOAM General Assembly, side-events and organic exhibition) is to share experiences, innovations, knowledge about the organic world with a special attention on the organizing country. The Congress provides an extraordinary momentum and inspiration for all stakeholders from around the world that are proud to be part. It is THE leading event for the development of the organic sector worldwide.
The congress lasts 3 days and has 3 plenary and 8 breakout sessions with more than 250 presentations of impressive personalities providing latest insights. It gathers more than 2500 people from the organic sector worldwide (scientists, practitioners, trainers, farmers, processors, traders, etc.). During the congress an exhibition is held for scientists, institutions and companies to present their work. The General Assembly is organised for IFOAM members including a motion bazaar on a boat trip on the Bosporus. Over 600 organizations use their democratic rights and elect the World Board, decide the global organic positions and move member motions for 2 days. Pre-conferences and assemblies of organizations a day or two before enrich the program and provide space for specialists to deepen their debates. A Turkish pre-conference concentrates on the national organic development. Side-events such as social events, film screenings, excursions, visits of (organic) markets and touristic tours are planned on the margins of the congress.
