How to Value Ecosystem Impacts and Opportunities

The-Guide-to-Corporate-Ecosystem-Valuation

The Guide to Corporate Ecosystem Valuation (CEV) is the latest instrument the Council has developed to help companies value the risks and opportunities associated with their impacts and dependence on ecosystem services.

In the past twelve months, fifteen companies have been road testing the new guide. CEV was developed by the WBCSD and its partners to help business build the case for sustainable ecosystem management. The WBCSD has identified 10 reasons why companies should awaken to the opportunities CEV offers. Improved decision-making is one of them, capturing new income streams is another. Although not all of the pilots have been completed, fi ve road testers agreed to lift the veil over their preliminary fi ndings. Most of them belong to the core team that has driven the WBCSD’s ecosystem agenda. The pilots apply to water management (GHD), CO2 reduction (Hitachi Chemical), agriculture (Syngenta), natural habitats (Aggregate Industries / Holcim), and power generation (EDP). The following interviews illustrate how far companies have already come in setting up models that bring ecosystem issues to the heart of their business.

“If you don’t have a market price, people might think there is no value either.” Mikkel Kallesoe, Program Manager Ecosystems Focus Area of the WBCSD, summarizes a key ecosystem challenge companies around the world face when trying to address issues of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation.

Publications of The Confederation of European Environmental Engineering Societies

CEEES publications were originally initiated as a group of formal documents that CEEES would made available as hard copies. They include reports of work undertaken by CEEES groups, textbooks on Environmental Engineering topics as well as CEEES conference proceedings. CEEES publications are additional to the CEEES reports, workshops and papers available in the “Downloads” section of the website.

Environmentally Sustainable Transport and Climate Change: Experiences and lessons from community initiatives

This publication is a result of a review of 65 sustainable transport community projects funded by the GEF Small Grants Programme. Lessons and experiences documented in the publication demonstrate that community initiatives play an important role in testing new approaches, raising awareness of new ideas, piloting innovative strategies, and informing and stimulating policy dialogue in a cost-effective way.

For instance, community initiatives with local civil society organizations in Pune, India, prompted a policy shift by the city towards supporting bus rapid transit and the development of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. In Chiang Mai, Thailand, the municipal government is re-allocating a portion of its transport funds towards non-motorized transport infrastructure. In other cases (e.g., Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Jordan, Egypt, and Lithuania), sustainable transport community projects have resulted in government policy shifts and stimulated commercial activities, leading to sustainable strategies for addressing local transport challenges while benefiting the global climate.

The publication was first published and launched at the twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention (COP-12) and second meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MOP-2) in Nairobi, Kenya, 6-17 November 2006

Renewables 2010 Global Status Report

E-mail Print PDF
REN21 Report coverThe Renewables 2010 Global Status Report provides an integrated perspective on the global renewable energy situation. Since the first Global Status Report was produced five years ago, the analysis has become the most frequently referenced report on renewable energy business and policy, serving a wide range of audiences from investors and government decision makers to students, project developers, researchers, and industrial manufacturers. It provides testimony of the undeterred growth of electricity, heat, and fuel production capacities from renewable energy sources, including solar PV, wind power, solar hot water/heating, biofuels, hydropower, and geothermal.

The Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), a global policy network that provides a forum for international leadership on renewable energy, produced the report in collaboration with a global network of research partners. Worldwatch Senior Fellows Janet Sawin and Eric Martinot served as the report's lead authors.
