Linking biodiversity, material cycling and ecosystem services in a changing world

Linking biodiversity, material cycling and ecosystem services in a changing world

Biodiversity is the foundation for almost all ecosystem services. The known relationships, though, between biodiversity and material cycling may or may not inform the translation into ecosystem services. As the concept of the ecosystem service is of interest not only to scientists but also to policy makers and stakeholders, understanding the relationship between these three components is essential. The 102nd annual meeting will support sessions that focus on and explore, in general, how biodiversity is the foundation for many ecosystem services, how ecosystem functioning can translate into ecosystem services, and the role different dimensions of biodiversity play in developing such understanding.

Basic Principles of Deep Ecology

https://soulcraftwisdom.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/deep_ecology_header1.jpg

In April 1984, during the advent of Spring and John Muir’s birthday, George Sessions and Arne Næss summarized fifteen years of thinking on the principles of deep ecology while camping in Death Valley, California. In this great and special place, they articulated these principles in a literal, somewhat neutral way, hoping that they would be understood and accepted by persons coming from different philosophical and religious positions.

Readers are encouraged to elaborate their own versions of deep ecology, clarify key concepts and think through the consequences of acting from these principles.

Global Sustainable Transport Conference

E-mail Print PDF

Recognizing the fundamental role of sustainable transport in fighting climate change and achieving the sustainable future we want, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will convene the first ever global conference on sustainable transport, on 26 and 27 November 2016 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. In resolution 70/197 titled “Towards comprehensive cooperation among all modes of transport for promoting sustainable multimodal transit corridors”, the General Assembly welcomed the initiative of the Secretary-General to convene the Conference.

The Conference will build on the intergovernmental discussions on sustainable transport. The outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), held in 2012, stresses that transportation and mobility are central to sustainable development. It recognizes the need to promote an integrated approach to policymaking at the national, regional and local levels for transport services and systems to advance sustainable development.

Transforming food and farming through organics

Future agri-food systems

Organic as a leading solution

Organic under new EU rules & policies

Almost a decade after the first Congress, IFOAM EU is celebrating its 10th European Organic Congress in the Netherlands this April 2016. The theme of this year’s Congress is transforming food and farming through organics. We want to look at how organic and agro-ecological approaches can really lead future agri-food systems and contribute to the development of EU policies that fundamentally address political, environmental and societal challenges.

The Congress aims to build on the outcomes of the IFOAM EU Vision 2030 process which culminated in the launch of “Transforming Food and Farming: An Organic Vision for Europe” in Latvia in 2015 and the strategies. Together with diverse food and farming stakeholders, we will develop practical strategies to develop organics in the long term and shape the EU market and policy developments so critical to transforming food and farming in the short to medium-term.

Implementing innovative ecological solutions for farmers and rural communities

Rural Development Programmes - European Innovation Partnership - Organic Regulation Review

Member states and regions will launch the Rural Development Programmes of the new EU Common Agricultural Policy in 2015. What will the impact on famers and rural communities throughout Europe be? How can the new programmes stimulate greater delivery of public goods and green job creation?

The European Innovation Partnership for Agriculture (EIP-AGRI) aims to bring rural development, farming and research together. It presents many opportunities and can be used to put eco-functional intensification at the heart of the EU productivity and sustainability objectives. How will this new policy instrument be implemented? How can organic and agroecological approaches contribute to its development?

The new rural development regulation offers the potential for greater recognition for organic farming, yet the sector faces the prospect of considerable regulatory changes in the coming years. How can the new organic regulation help make Europe more organic and drive innovation for sustainable food production?

Share your view and learn about experiences from all over Europe and beyond at the 8th European Organic Congress!

Register now for the 8th European Organic Congress (10 – 11 September - Bari, Italy)

About Earth Day Network

The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Growing out of the first Earth Day, Earth Day Network (EDN) works with over 22,000 partners in 192 countries to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

But Earth Day Network does not stop there.

All of EDN’s activities, whether greening schools or promoting green economic policies at home and abroad, inform and energize populations so they will act to secure a healthy future for themselves and their children. With its partner organizations, EDN provides civic engagement opportunities at the local, state, national and global levels. At every turn, EDN works to broaden the definition of "environment" to include all issues that affect our health, our communities and our environment, such as greening deteriorated schools, creating green jobs and investment, and promoting activism to stop air and water pollution.

Over the last 40 years, EDN has executed successful environmental campaigns on issues ranging climate change and drinking water to voter registration and saving the whale. EDN is a recognized leader in creating civically–oriented innovative programs with partners outside of the environmental movement to tackle new challenges. Our core programs today focus on:

A Guide to Lighting your Home with Solar Energy

Jan 07, 2014 by Wendy Weinert

Solar energy is fast becoming the most cost-effective and realistic alternative to conventional energy production. In residential capacities, solar energy systems harness energy and heat from the sun, converting it in order to power your lights, hot water heater, appliances, and more. There are numerous types of solar energy systems, and the benefits of incorporating this environmentally friendly resource into your home are astonishing. From reducing the impact that you have on the environment to cutting your utility bills and upping your resale value, solar energy is truly a worthwhile investment.

Solar energy utilizes the natural resources of the sun to generate heat and electricity. Systems come in various sizes, from just a few panels to light your home to larger systems that essentially take you off of the grid. Most residential applications work via photovoltaic cells, which absorb light and then transfer it to a semiconductor, freeing up electrons and generating a current. The current is then fed into your home, powering everything from your table lamp to major appliances. It can also be fed directly back into the power system you're already hooked up to, sending it to the utility company as an energy surplus. Solar energy is considered an intermittent source, simply because cloud cover eliminates the availability of sunlight, halting the process. However, residential solar energy systems often come equipped with a storage feature, creating a back-up when the weather doesn't cooperate.

CEM 2014 - International Conference and Exhibition on Emissions Monitoring

The 11th International Conference & Exhibition on Emissions Monitoring (CEM) 2014

CEM 2014 The 11th International Conference and exhibition on Emissions monitoring will take place in Turkey in the country’s capital, Istanbul, from the 14th – 16th May 2014.

Since its inaugural meeting in 1997 the CEM conferences have been held in the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Denmark, France, Italy, The Czech Republic and now it comes to the historic city of Istanbul where East meets West. The CEM event brings together the International emissions monitoring community to network, trade ideas and discuss technology, methods, applications, legislation and standardisation relevant to all atmospheric pollutants which include particulates, SO2, NOx VOC, trace elements and greenhouse gases.

The Turkish economy has experienced annual economic growth rates of nearly 10% for the last couple of years and this has increased the wealth of the country, and its people. The growth has been driven by Western Europe outsourcing manufacturing to Turkey instead of China and the main drivers have been lead times and quality of products.

Turkey prides itself on being everyone’s friend and as well as a great market in itself, Turkey also makes a great location to launch into the Middle East Region.
